Description

Lampkyns is a house dating to circa 1600, with alterations and extensions carried out between 1925 and 1928. It was originally constructed with a timber frame and has a red and blue chequered brick ground floor, tile hanging to the first floor, and exposed timber posts on the return elevations with red brick infill. The roof is tiled, with stacks to the right and a moulded, clustered stack to the centre left, and features four gabled dormers. The original plan was of a two-cell lobby entry, later extended by one bay to the right. The house has two storeys and an attic with a hipped roof. Windows are predominantly 3-light, 20th-century mullioned and transomed wooden casements, with a glazed door centrally located to the left and a 2-light casement above. A catslide is outshot, and 20th-century extensions are present to the rear. Internally, the visible details appear to date to circa 1600, although the reported “sans purlin” roof structure may suggest an even earlier origin. Features include an arched braced frame with stop-chamfered joists, a large stone stack with red brick repairs where a bread oven once stood, and stone fireplaces at the upper levels, one with a cross-shaped chamfer stop.
