Description
House. Dating from around 1500, it was altered in the 17th century. The house is timber-framed, with the ground floor clad in painted brick and the first floor rendered with applied timber studding. The left return is weather boarded, while the right return is tile hung with a sandstone base. It has a plain tiled roof. Originally a Wealden hall house, it now has two storeys, a basement, and an attic. The house sits on a plinth and has a half-hipped roof with stacks at the end on the right and clustered in the centre to the left. A gabled dormer is present on the right. There are four wooden casement windows on each floor. The original entrance was in the centre on the left, but it is now accessed via a glazed door within a gabled timber porch dated 1946, located on the left return. Basement openings are also visible on the left return elevation. A catslide outshot and late 20th-century dormers and alterations are to the rear. The interior features a roof rebuilt in the 17th century with a staggered purlin pattern that incorporates old timbers, some darkened by soot. The original end bays retain transverse cambered tie beams with mortices for crown posts. The full timber frame is visible, showcasing arched braces and roll and hollow chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A 17th-century red brick and stone stack and a stone-lined cellar, partly rebuilt with red brick, are also present.
