Description
A group of two headstones and two chest tombs is located about 20 metres north of the Church of St Mary in Goudhurst. The first headstone is dedicated to an unknown individual named Williams, the wife of Thomas Williams, and dates from the mid-18th century. It is made of stone and stands about 4 feet high, featuring scrolled shoulders on pedestals and a scrolled head, adorned with two cherubs' heads in profile. The second headstone is for Thomas Williams, who died in 1783. This stone is also about 4 feet high and displays rococo scrolled shoulders and head, along with motifs that include two cherubs' heads, a rayed crown, a serpent biting its tail, and an open book. This headstone is more refined in execution compared to his wife's. Nearby are two simple early 18th-century chest tombs, which have crudely ogee moulded top slabs resting on monolithic bases.
