Description
The raised pavement in front of The Star and Eagle Hotel, known as Spyways, dates from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. It features a sandstone and red brick retaining wall. The wall in front of the hotel is made of stone, is parapetted, and stands about 1.5 meters high. It includes a central flight of stairs and has a hotel signpost integrated into it. The parapet steps down to the right, leading to a set of steps that provide access to a passage between the former Lloyds Bank and the former Eight Bells Inn. The pavement in front of the ladder is retained by a brick wall approximately 1.2 meters high, which has wooden posts for bar-rails and steps on both the left and right sides, also featuring a pub-sign post (though the sign itself has been removed). To the right, the raised platform known as Spyways consists of irregular revetted stone terracing with a flight of steps winding up the center.
