Description
The Baptist Chapel and former Sunday School, built in 1853 and 1899 respectively, is located on Rye Road in Sandhurst. The chapel is constructed of red brick and features four bays facing north and three bays to the west, each side flanked by white brick pilasters with segmental arched arcading above. The two central arches on the north front have Venetian windows, while the outer arches are round-headed at the first floor level. The eaves cornice is made of white brick with cogging, and the building has a slate roof with a brick chimneystack. The gable end facing west is designed as a pediment, with two similar arches below containing windows on both the ground and first floors. There is a square porch at the entrance.
Inside, the chapel has a semi-circular wooden pulpit and a gallery supported by two Tuscan columns. Attached to the chapel is the Sunday School, a single-storey building made of red brick with a slate roof. It features one gabled dormer and one false gabled dormer with a clock face, along with three Gothick windows that have keystones, and two plank doors. The Sunday School also includes pilasters and a cogged eaves cornice. An inscription on the building reads, "In memory of Thomas Ellis Slaughter, founder of this school, died Sept. 28 1899 aged 69 years."
