Description

TQ 53 37 SPELDHURST GROOMBRIDGE HILL (off east Side), OLD GROOMBRIDGE 16/508 Barn approx 140m north east of Groombridge Place

GV II

Barn. Probably late C17/early C18. Weatherboarded timber frame on coursed sandstone footings. Peg-tile roof.

Plan: Double barn on a rought north south axis with 2 sets of opposing double doors onto the threshing floors.

Exterior: On the west side the right hand (southern) doorway is full height, the other one not quite. The reverse is true on the other side. Both contain probably C20 double doors. On the east side the ground level is lower and therefore the doorways are raised for ease of loading from carts. This side also includes 3 loading hatch doorways, one in the centre and one each end. Roof is gable-ended.

Interior: Late C17/early C18 structure is well-preserved. Large scantling timbers. 6 bays. Wall frames include straight tension braces. Wall posts have jowled heads and tie beams have curving arch braces. Uncollared trusses with 2 sets of staggered butt purlins. In the C19 the trusses were adapted to accommodate king posts with raking struts.
