Description

This barn, located approximately 140 meters northeast of Groombridge Place, dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on coursed sandstone footings, topped with a peg-tile roof.

The barn is designed as a double structure aligned roughly north-south, with two sets of opposing double doors leading to the threshing floors. On the west side, the southern doorway is full height while the northern doorway is slightly shorter; the reverse is true on the east side. Both sides have what are likely 20th-century double doors. The east side has a lower ground level, resulting in raised doorways for easier loading from carts, and includes three loading hatch doorways: one in the center and one at each end. The roof is gable-ended.

Inside, the barn retains a well-preserved late 17th century to early 18th century structure with large scantling timbers arranged in six bays. The wall frames feature straight tension braces, while the wall posts have jowled heads. The tie beams are supported by curving arch braces. The uncollared trusses include two sets of staggered butt purlins. In the 19th century, the trusses were modified to include king posts with raking struts.
