Description

Sandhurst Farnhouse is a house dating to circa 1500, which was re-clad in the 19th century and refenestrated in the late 20th century. It is timber framed and clad with red and blue brick in English bond to the ground floor, with a sandstone base, and weatherboarding to the first floor. The roof is tiled, with a rebuilt stack in the centre to the right.

The house has a four-bay through-passage plan and two storeys with a basement, all set on a plinth. A continuous jetty extends from the ends of the floor beams. The roof is hipped, and there are four three-light wooden casements on the first floor and three on the ground floor, all with segmental heads. There is a boarded door to the centre left, and glazed doors to the right. A 20th-century lean-to addition projects out to the right, featuring wooden casements and a boarded door. Basement openings are visible on the left return, and a large sandstone base is present on the rear elevation.

The interior features a crown post roof with a moulded octagonal main post and crown post trusses elsewhere, incorporating massive arched braces, with collar purlins set eccentrically. The apparent lack of soot blackening and the continuous jetty (though not conclusively original) suggest that it was not a hall house, despite the moulded crown post. Early stone and wooden fireplaces with four-centred arched and wave-moulded surrounds remain. A four-centred arched main door frame with hollowed spandrels survives, along with the frame and jambs of two service doorways above the basement end.
