Description

This is a headstone dated 1782, located approximately 3.5 metres south of the chancel of the Old Church of St Peter in Pembury. It commemorates Thomas Bayly and is made of upright sandstone, standing about 1 metre high. The top of the headstone is shaped and features a carved crown, with a frame surrounding a central oval that depicts a lamb among clouds. The inscription begins in Gothic lettering, followed by Roman serif upper and lower case lettering in italics. It records the deaths of Thomas Bayly in 1782, his wife Joan in 1776, and their daughter Margaret in 1789.
