Description
This is a pair of adjacent headstones located approximately 4 meters west-southwest of the tower of the Old Church of St Peter. The headstones commemorate members of the Hartridge family and are dated 1684 and 1782. Both are upright slabs made of sandstone with shaped heads.
The smaller headstone, on the right, stands about 500 millimeters high and features a recessed front inscribed in Roman serif capitals, marking the death of Michael Hartridge in 1684. The larger headstone, on the left, is approximately 1.2 meters high and has a head carved with two winged cherub heads in profile, facing each other among scrolls. The inscription on this headstone uses Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the deaths of James Hartridge in 1764 and his wife Elizabeth in 1782.
