Description
The Moat is a house dating from around 1500, classified as a Wealden hall-house with four bays, and features 20th-century additions. It is constructed of timber framing with plaster infill and has a steeply pitched tiled roof with gablets. The house stands two storeys high and has five windows. The first floor of the southern window bay projects, supported by protruding floor joists with down braces, while the northern bay has been underbuilt and features a 20th-century bay with matching close-studding. The eaves of the original sections project on curved brackets, including a central bracket. There are five 20th-century casement windows with small leaded panes. The original entrance includes an arched doorcase with durns. To the right side and rear, there is a single-storey brick extension and a two-storey extension to the rear, both from the 20th century.
Inside, the house features a dragon beam in the south and a roll-moulded end of the hall beam. There is an inserted 16th-century ceiling with lambs' tongue stops and an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and carved spandrels. The posts are jowled, and the first floor has exposed tie beams and old floorboards. An octagonal crown post with three head braces (originally four) supports the collar beam. The house is situated on a moated site, with the moat still remaining.
