Description
Upper Scullgate Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage, originally built as a house and later subdivided. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier and features a timber-framed structure with a cross wing. The cottage was extended to the rear in the 17th or 18th century. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the first floor has weatherboarding on the front elevation, with applied framing and a tile-hung gable on the left side elevation. The roof is tiled and includes a large stepped brick chimney stack from the late 16th century. The building has two storeys and attics in the gable end, with three windows that have 20th-century casements and a simple 20th-century half-glazed door. Inside, there is a 17th-century parlour fireplace and exposed beams. The roof from the 17th century features through purlins and lacks a ridgepiece. Some old floorboards are present, and there is a two-plank door leading to the bathroom.
