Description

Old Allens is a farmhouse comprising a 16th-century cottage, an 18th-century cottage, and a 19th-century central wing joined together, resulting in an extremely irregular plan. The left-hand portion of the house has a coursed rubble stone ground floor with some galletting, and is tile-hung above. The centre features red and blue brick in a chequer pattern. The right-hand portion has a red-brick underbuilt ground floor, with exposed timber framing and plaster infilling above, extending around the corner of the building and along the south side. This left-hand section of the house projects forward. The building has moulded eaves and a plain tiled roof with several end stacks. It is two storeys high, with an extremely irregular pattern of modern lattice casement windows. An off-centre boarded and ribbed door provides entry.
