Description

Trench Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 1830s to early 1840s, and it is believed to be shown on the tithe map, although some external details appear to be later additions. The ground floor is constructed of brick, while the first floor is tile-hung, featuring bands of scalloped tiles and decorative diapering. The roof is covered with peg tiles and has 19th-century crested ridge tiles, along with brick chimney stacks.

The house faces east and overlooks Coldharbour Lane. It has a double depth plan beneath a two-span roof, with the entrance located to the right of the center, facing the staircase. The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-bay east elevation. The gable-ended roof has a decorative brick band below the tile-hanging. The left bay projects forward and is gabled at the front, featuring deep verges and pierced curly bargeboards. To the right, there is a porch with a lean-to roof that covers the 20th-century front door, and a ground floor bay with a hipped roof. The windows are striking casement types, with 1-, 2-, and 3-light configurations, each light containing two panes subdivided into four sections by diagonal glazing bars. The first-floor window in the projecting bay is set within a vertical panel that has rectangles of roughcast with incised diagonal decoration. There is also a gabled dormer on the first floor to the left, complete with matching bargeboards and rendered decoration. The gable ends of the main roof also feature matching bargeboards. The left return and rear elevations include round-headed brick openings on the ground floor.

The interior has not been inspected. Overall, Trench Farmhouse is a roadside house notable for its unusual external details.
