Description

The boundary wall to the south and south-east of Bishop's Lodge is a garden wall dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with some blue brick headers and features stone coping. The wall stands 5½ feet high and extends 30 yards in length. A stone plaque is set into the wall facing south, which is inscribed with the following text: "NEAR THIS PLACE FELL LIEUT. COLONEL SHADWELL WHO WAS SHOT TO THE HEART BY A DESERTER ON THE MORNING OF THE FIRST OF JUNE 1799. THE ASSASSIN WITH ANOTHER HIS COMPANION WERE IMMEDIATELY SECURED AND BROUGHT TO JUSTICE."
