Description
The Thatch Cottage is a cottage that may have origins in the 18th century, but is probably from the early 19th century. It features timber framing on brick footings, is clad with painted weatherboarding, has a 19th-century brick stack and chimney shaft, and is topped with a thatch roof.
The cottage has a two-room plan and faces north, with an axial stack located between the two rooms. The larger room on the right serves as the parlour, which has stairs rising in the rear outer corner, replacing an earlier staircase that rose alongside the stack. The kitchen is on the left, with an entrance hall behind it and a doorway in the left end wall. There are integral outshots at the rear.
The building stands two storeys tall, with single-storey outshots. The front exterior features two ground floor windows and one first floor window, with two windows on each floor in the left end and one window on each floor in the right end. Most windows are 20th-century casements, although some contain diamond panes of leaded glass. The original casements with iron glazing bars, which feature a Gothick pattern of trefoil-headed panes, are found in the ground floor front window and the first floor windows at each end. The doorway in the left end has a two-flap plank door behind a thatch-roofed gabled porch supported by plain posts. The roof is gable-ended to the right, half-hipped to the left, and extends down over the outshots at the rear.
Inside, the cottage displays plain carpentry details, with some of the framing exposed. The framing consists of relatively slender scantling with straight down braces. The two-bay roof is concealed by later plaster, but some straight wind braces are visible.
