Description

This building is a former barn located approximately 4 metres south of Tithe Ward Farmhouse. It likely dates from the 17th century and underwent alterations in the early 20th century, with renovations around 1988. The barn features exposed timber-framing, with parts underbuilt using 19th and 20th-century brick, and has a peg-tile roof.

The barn is oriented on a rough north-south axis and faces west. It has been converted into garages and a workshop and stands two storeys tall, with possible secondary lean-to outshots at each end. The exterior has a three-bay front, with late 20th-century windows that are actually 19th-century iron-framed casements, showcasing attractive glazing bar patterns of intersecting hexagons. The first floor features a large central two-light window flanked by smaller single-light windows. The left bay at ground floor level includes a 20th-century door next to a tall narrow light, while the centre and right bays have 20th-century garage doors. The outshots have similar windows, and the main roof is half-hipped at both ends.

Inside, the loft is supported by chamfered and step-stopped crossbeams, which were added in the 20th century but may have originally been at a lower level. The roof structure consists of two collared tie-beam trusses with clasped side purlins. Queen struts were removed when the tie beams were cut through, and many of the common rafters appear to be late medieval and have been reused, as they include notches for lap-jointed collars.
