Description

The planned farmyard at Court Lodge Farm dates from around 1840 and is constructed from Pagstone rubble with plain tiled roofs. It features a rectangular layout that includes low ranges of byres, workshops, stables, and wagon sheds, along with two oast roundels to the northwest, which are attached to a cart-shed with storage above.

Between the two southern arms of the farmyard is a single-storey piggery, and to the south stands a two-storey timber-framed barn that is weatherboarded and open at the ends for cart access. The northern block serves as a cattle lodge, originally designed for 53 head of cattle and nine calves. It now functions as a cattle lodge. The central northern entrance is flanked by 1½-storey blocks, including a Turnip House with a Cake Room area to the east and a Hay and Chaff Room with a granary above to the west. Single-storey blocks of a Boiling House to the east and a Straw barn to the west complete the arrangement.

Entrances to the yard are located between the barn and the cattle lodge on both the east and west sides. This farmyard was built for Lord Torrington and was featured as an exemplary farm plan in the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England in 1845, in an article discussing 'Farming in Kent'.
