Description
1-4 Club Cottages is a row of four adjoining artisan cottages, built around the mid-19th century. The cottages are constructed in Flemish bond brick with tile-hanging on the first floor, featuring bands of ornamental tiles, and have peg-tile roofs with brick stacks.
The cottages face east and are symmetrically planned with two cells each. Each cottage has one main front room and a rear service room, with the principal rooms heated by two axial stacks. The front doors for Nos 2 and 3 are located in the center of the row, while Nos 1 and 4 are accessed from the sides. No 4 has an L-shaped plan with a rear right wing.
The exterior consists of two storeys with a hipped roof at both ends. The east front is symmetrical with four windows and features paired porches on rustic posts in the center, along with projecting enclosed porches for Nos 1 and 4. All cottages retain their original plank and cover strip front doors, as well as original two-light timber casement windows with two panes per light. Some alterations were underway at No 1 at the time of the survey in 1988.
These cottages are well-preserved examples of workers' housing and form a group with Nos 5-8, a detached row to the north that has a similar external treatment but an earlier core.
