Description
The Ursuline Convent School, built in 1886, was originally a private house, reportedly for a tea planter. The front of the building features 2 to 3 storeys of red brick with stone window dressings and three gables. It includes a mix of sash windows, modified Venetian windows, and windows with mullions and transoms. The ground floor has a porch with an open pediment that contains a moulded shell, supported by two plain Tuscan columns and two pilasters. The rear elevation also has three gables, two of which are curved. Inside, the building retains a good period interior, including a staircase with heavy carved balusters. The Parlour features a Neo-Jacobean plasterwork ceiling adorned with scrolls and putti, while the Library has a strapwork plastered ceiling. There are fireplaces with swag or scroll decorations, including one marble fireplace with pilasters shaped like terms and a swag frieze.
