Description

This is a terrace row dating to around 1820, built of stock brick. It rises three storeys plus a basement and has a parapet, with a stepped elevation to the left, rising four times. Numbers 9 to 19 have regular fenestration with three glazing bar sashes on the second and first floors, and two on the ground floor, all within painted surrounds. Each house has a central door, originally consisting of six raised and fielded panels; some are now half-glazed, complemented by a semi-circular fanlight, some of which retain tracery. These doors are set within double-rebated semi-circular surrounds with keystones and imposts. Simple iron railings lead to the entrances, and iron grills cover the basement openings on both sides. The upper storeys of numbers 9 and 11 were restored in the late 20th century. Number 7 is of only two window bays and has 20th-century wooden casements on the second and first floors. Number 5 features a rusticated base, a single glazing bar sash on the second floor, a French window with a cast iron balcony on the first floor, and a late 19th-century double sash within a heavy moulded plaster surround on the ground floor. A half-glazed door sits to the right, topped with a rectangular fanlight and cornice supported by heavy brackets, accompanied by a segmentally headed basement opening with a grill. Number 5 is included on the list for its group value. The terrace is shown on Collard & Hurst's plan of Ramsgate from 1822. A 20th-century infill now separates the terrace from the similar row at numbers 21-33, replacing a late 18th-century chapel that originally gave the street its name.
