Description
The conservatory and the wall to which it is attached are located in King George VI Memorial Park in Ramsgate. The conservatory dates from the late 18th century, while the wall is from the early 19th century. This greenhouse was re-erected for Sir Moses Montefiore. It features a cast iron structure with painted copper glazing bars and scalloped glass panes. The brick wall is approximately 15 feet high, crenellated, and about 30 yards long, serving as the outside wall that has been extended and heightened from the original courtyard. It connects to the Lodge Cottages via a brick arch.
The conservatory is designed as a lean-to with a segmental plan. It has a panelled base wall and long principal supports on internal cast iron columns. The central entrance consists of double margin-light half-glazed doors with sidelights under a pediment, featuring scrolled tracery. The interior retains the original structure, including benches, supports, and the heating system.
This conservatory is the most notable feature of a complex that includes gates, lodges, staff cottages, and a stable/service courtyard associated with the now-demolished East Cliff Lodge. This lodge was built between 1794 and 1799 for Mr. Benjamen Bond Hopkins, designed by Mr. Boncey of Margate. Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore first rented the property in 1822 and purchased it in 1831 for £5,500. Sir Moses lived there permanently from 1826 until his death at the age of 100 in 1885. The main house was demolished in 1954.
