Description

This is a former threshing barn, with the northernmost three and a half bays likely dating to the 16th century and the southernmost three bays added in the late 17th century. Later repairs and re-raftering occurred in the mid-19th century. The barn is timber-framed and clad in brickwork, with a flint plinth on part of the structure. It has a slate roof that is half-hipped to the south and hipped to the north. The south-west end features late 17th-century brickwork on a flint plinth, with weatherboarding and a half-hipped gable containing two openings with iron pintle hinges. The north-west elevation has 19th-century brickwork in an English bond pattern, using alternating courses of red and yellow brick, two cart entrances, and three brick buttresses. The south-east elevation is similar, with two cart entrances and two 20th-century brick and one concrete buttress. The north-east end has similar 19th-century brickwork.

The interior is six and a half bays long. The northernmost three and a half bays are the earliest, probably from the 16th century, and feature jowled arcade posts with passing braces, tie beams with curved windbraces, and collar beams with windbraces. Some timbers retain traces of bark. This section was extended southwards, likely in the late 17th century. This southern section has upright posts, passing braces, and tie beams with curved windbraces, but the roof structure has staggered side purlins and a ridgepiece. Some timbers appear to be reused, and some rafters have been replaced in the 19th and 20th centuries. Evidence of late 17th-century brickwork was observed on some internal southern walls, although these were partially obscured by stacked boxes at the time of inspection.
