Description
The monument to the Woodward family, located about 75 metres north of the cemetery chapel in Ramsgate, was created around 1920 by Elliott and Sons, monumental masons from Ramsgate. It features a black marble structure with a white marble plot wall. The low moulded wall includes corner piers topped with ball finials. At the center stands an obelisk on a cross-shaped base, which has a pedimented top also adorned with a ball finial.
The eastern face of the obelisk bears the engraved name of the Woodward family, along with inscriptions on three sides. The north face is dedicated to "The Brotherhood of English Speaking Peoples," honoring those who died in the Great War, as well as motherhood, referred to as "The Heroes of Humdrum," and to animals and birds that have suffered at the hands of humans, stating "And to the gradually disappearing wildlife of the Earth." This dedication is attributed to Joseph George Woodward.
Each face of the pedimented top piece features bronze relief plaques, also signed by J.G. Woodward, illustrating seals and sea lions. The plaques commemorate various achievements, including the progress in the education of seals in 1878 and sea lions in 1883, life-saving efforts from drowning in 1878, the first sea lion equilibrists in 1898, and improvements to submarine detector technology during Admiralty work from 1916 to 1917, all depicted with appropriate dramatic scenes.
