Description

Draper's Almshouses, also known as Yoakley's Almshouses, are a group of almshouses that form three sides of a courtyard. The oldest part is the northeast wing, built in the 18th century, with a date inscribed in brick headers on the west gable indicating 1709. The building has a ground floor and an attic storey above, featuring ten windows and restored dormers. The exterior is constructed of knapped flints with red brick dressings, quoins, and an eaves cornice.

The center of the wing has a shaped Dutch gable made of flints and bricks, with a second and third storey and a clock above, topped by a wooden belvedere with a bell. The windows are casement style, and the doorcases have rectangular fanlights with four-panel moulded doors. Two 19th-century bay windows have been added to the central building beneath the gable.

On the north side of the wing facing the road, there are six small transversal wings ending in shaped Dutch gables, which were added in 1852. The northwest and southeast wings of the courtyard were built in 1848 and 1850, respectively, and were lengthened in 1881 and 1882. These wings are similar to the old wing, featuring a central Dutch gable but with gabled dormers and Gothicised (Tudor) windows.

Draper's Almshouses and the Lodge to the Almshouses form a cohesive group.
