Description

49 and 51 High Street form a single building. The front of the building dates to the Regency period, though the underlying house is likely from the 18th century. The building is two storeys and has attics, rendered in stucco. It has a tiled roof hidden by a parapet, with two hipped dormers. Three sash windows remain with their original glazing bars. Two of these windows are elliptical bows extending through both floors, with tripartite arrangements and elliptical tympana above. These tympana are decorated with fan-shaped ornamentation. A porch with fluted Doric columns and an enriched frieze leads to a first-floor cast iron balcony, accessed by seven steps. The left-side doorcase comprises six fielded panels, leading to a further seven steps with a handrail. The cellars of No. 49 are located beneath the main house. Nos. 23 to 45 (odd) and 49 to 81 (odd) combine to form a notable group.
