Description

This is a tall timber-framed building, originally part of the George Inn, that was refronted with red brick in the early 18th century. It is situated on the south side of High Street, Sittingbourne. The building is three storeys high and constructed of red brick with grey brick headers laid alternately. The roof is hipped and tiled, with a decorative wooden eaves cornice featuring modillions. A brick string course runs above the first floor. There are nine sash windows with original glazing bars on the upper floors. The ground floor features modern shop fronts, although the shop front to number 39 includes three older engaged Ionic columns. A carriage archway is located at the west end, where ceiling beams are visible. The building forms a group with numbers 23 to 45 (odd) and 49 to 81 (odd) on the same side of the street.
