Description
Forge House and Barrow House, along with the railings to the north, were built in 1823. They are constructed of white brick with a slate roof and feature two storeys above a basement, topped with a hipped roof that has four evenly spaced stacks. The front of the building has a regular arrangement of six glazing bar sash windows on the first floor, which have cambered and gauged heads, and four glazing bar sash windows with gauged basket arches on the ground floor. There are two six-panelled doors on either side, each with semi-circular traceried fanlights set in gauged arched surrounds at the top of a flight of two steps.
Inside, the meeting rooms of the Barrow's Trust are preserved, featuring a marble fireplace, panelled walls, and a carved and moulded frieze. The forecourt is enclosed by fleur-de-lys iron railings that are 30 yards in length. The rear elevation has a plaque that reads: "Erected By Mr. Barrow's Trustees Richard Tylden Esq. William Bland Jnr. Esq. Revd. R.O. Tylden William Baldwin Esq. 1823". The Trust continues to maintain charitable functions and holds meetings in the assembly rooms.
