Description
Culver House, also known as Hammertower and Hammerfield Cottage, is an early 19th-century house that was converted and extended in 1859 by George Devey for Sir James Nasmyth, who was an astronomer, engineer, and inventor of the steam hammer. The building is now divided into four residences. Hammerfield Cottage, located at the west end, was the former observatory and workshop, while the other dwellings make up the original house.
The entrance front is two storeys high with five windows and features a projecting gabled porch section along with an octagonal tower topped with an ogee leaded roof. The structure has an irregular shape, characteristic of Devey's style, with large-diapered brickwork and gables adorned with ball finials. The garden front displays five distinct bargeboarded gables, most of which are half-timbered with brick or plaster filling, and some sections feature tile hanging. The windows are large and include both mullioned and transomed designs, made from wood and stone. A terrace with a low balustrade enhances the property.
