Description

No 97 (the Old Forge) and No 101 (including former stables) are an antique shop with living quarters and a further dwelling, largely dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations of the 18th century. The rambling, irregular building has varying dates and elevations. The north elevation features two gable ends, one of which is half-hipped, and a roof with a centre stack and ridge tiles. The construction is exposed timber framing with plaster infilling and painted brick. The centre section has a single storey with two half dormers, each with a tiled gable. There are lattice casement windows and a plain boarded door with a bracketed hood. The ground floor windows have boarded shutters. An oriel shop window with square leaded panes is to the right, supported on carved wooden brackets, with an 18th-century glazed door and a continuous moulded hood projection above the door and oriel. The west-facing elevation is also irregular, with a tiled gable brought down as a lean-to and a section of 18th-century painted brick to the left. To the extreme right is painted brick and stone with a tie hanging above, and a ridge tile roof. There are various windows, including a modern oriel shop window and an 18th-century panelled door with a bracketed hood. Two half dormers contain replaced sash windows with bars in exposed frames. Various weatherboarded additions are to the rear.
