Description

The Old Hall is a 15th-century hall house that was restored in 1926 by Professor Beresford Pite. It exhibits exposed timber framing with vertical half-timbering and rendered infilling. The building is two storeys high, with a ridge tile roof that extends as a lean-to on one side. A ridge stack is present. The first floor projects over the ground floor at both ends, supported by exposed joists. Continuous eaves and a gutter are supported centrally by curved angle pieces. The hall itself is unusually short, consisting of only one bay, and had previously been divided into two storeys and an attic. These internal divisions were removed, and original windows with wooden mullions have been reinstated. An old hearth, consisting of a circle of fire-worn stones, was uncovered in the centre of the original chalk floor, which had been covered by a later brick floor. The inglenook fireplace and chimney date from the 17th century. Modern additions have been made to either side, including a garage and a porch with brick screen walling, a random stone base, and pantile coping. There is also a two-storey brick addition to the right-hand side.
