Description

Toll Bar Cottage is a 16th century or earlier timber-framed building featuring painted brick and flint infilling. The first floor of the northwesternmost window bay extends outward on the ends of the floor joists and brackets, topped with a gable. The cottage has a tiled roof and stands two storeys high, with two casement windows. It is believed that this may have served as the toll cottage for the Turnpike Road, and the name of the nearby Sparepenny Lane might relate to local residents avoiding the toll.
