Description

Broughton Manor is a 16th-century house that has been significantly altered and extended in the 17th, 18th centuries, and more recently. The house is timber-framed. The front elevation is two stories and an attic in height, with two windows, and features a hipped tiled roof, a diapered 18th-century brick wall, and a stone foundation. Modern leaded casements and a gabled porch have been added. Other elevations display exposed timber framing with plaster infill, and a 17th-century gable end with ornamental bargeboards was added to the original 16th-century building, which exhibits jettying and a dragon beam. A large projecting brick and stone chimney is located at the west end. Inside, a large inglenook fireplace is present, and substantial original timberwork remains, although there has been considerable restoration, particularly in an open hall with a gallery. Broughton Manor was historically a property of the Crown, and during the reign of Henry VIII, it was used to house part of the retinue attending the Archbishop's Palace.
