Description
The Church of Saint Martin, a Grade I listed building, is located on the south-east side of Eynsford High Street. This church dates from the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 16th centuries and is constructed of flint with stone dressings, topped with a tiled roof. It features a nave with a south chapel or transept and a north aisle, an apsidal-ended chancel, and a west tower that has an inset broached shingled spire. There is a Galilee Porch situated to the west of the tower.
The west doorway, which has been reset, dates to the mid-12th century and is adorned with zigzags or spirals around the arch and side columns, scallop capitals, and a diapered tympanum. The south wall of the chancel includes two Norman windows. There are two blocked north arches leading to the chancel, featuring 13th-century mouldings. The tower arch is from the 13th century but was altered in the 15th century, while the chancel arch is from the 14th century. The north aisle, built in the 16th century, has cross gables. Inside, the chancel boasts a roof with embattled beams and a trefoiled double piscina in the apse. The church also contains a Perpendicular font. Above the west porch is the Coat of Arms of George III, and within the porch are two medieval stone coffins.
