Description
Little Mote is a house that includes the remaining part of a large 15th to 16th century mansion known as Little or Lower Mote, which was the principal house in Eynsford and held significance comparable to Lullingstone Castle. It features an L-shaped, later medieval timber-framed structure with modern extensions. The building has two storeys, with a ground floor made of brick and a first floor that is tile hung, topped by a tiled roof. There are three casement windows, and the gable end displays some exposed timber framing. A two-storey built-out porch is supported by two Tuscan columns, likely taken from another house. An external brick chimneystack is present.
Inside, the house has a Kingpost roof and a 16th century stone fireplace featuring a Tudor arch and curved spandrels, adorned with carvings of a tiger looking into a mirror, which is the rebus of the Sybill family. Some bannister rails and panelling have been relocated from a house in Richmond. The Sybill family, who once lived here, intermarried with the Harts of Lullingstone Castle. One of the owners in the 17th century, Isobel Wiseman, was a descendant of Sir Thomas More. The house may also be located on the site of the earliest hall of Eynsford Castle.
