Description

Great Norman Street Farmhouse is a 15th-century hall house, constructed with timber framing and subsequently altered. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has three windows. The building has a high-pitched, half-hipped tiled roof, with a tall, off-centre ridge stack and three hipped gabled dormers. The left bay features galleted rubble with red brick dressings, while the right bay has tile hanging on the first floor. Visible timber framing with brick infilling is present on the ground floor, along with a rubble plinth. Modern three- and four-light, square-paned casement windows are fitted, and a modern plank door is in place. A long rear wing has a roof that sweeps low to the side, and beyond this are 19th-century extensions culminating in an oast house, both tile-hung on the first floor with brickwork below a rubble plinth. At the rear, there are a pair of old iron casements and a plank door within an old frame. The interior contains substantial exposed timber, including very heavy diagonal braces, and the remains of a screens passage.
