Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on the north side of High Street in Kemsing. The nave dates from the early Norman period and features flint rubble walls with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped by a tiled roof. The chancel is similar in construction. The north aisle and chancel aisle, added in 1890-91 by Sir J G Jackson, are made of closely set flints. A timber south porch from the 14th century adds to the church's character. At the west end, a timber bell tower, possibly from the 16th century, rises through the nave and is capped with a shingled spire. The church has various windows, mostly 19th-century reconstructions in the Perpendicular style. Inside, there is a rood screen and loft from 1894 by W J Unsworth, which includes medieval fragments. Rood figures and other chancel decorations were created by Comper. The interior also features an 18th-century brass chandelier and a half-length brass memorial to Thomas de Hop, who died in 1347.
