Description
The Former Drying Loft at Turkey Mills is an early industrial building dating from around 1739 to 1740. It is notable for its exceptional length, although part of it is now hidden by a later building added to the south-west. This structure was originally part of the paper mills, with the top storey designated for drying paper. In 1950, the roof was lowered, the front was repointed, and a buttress was added. The building is constructed of red brick and has a tiled roof, with the ground floor projecting.
On the exposed north half, there are three tall multipaned windows to the right, while to the left, there are two tiers of three small windows. A similar arrangement originally flanked the tall windows on the right, and this configuration was repeated in the now-obscured south half of the building. The recessed top storey features weather-boarding, and the roof of the Drying Loft is of modified Queen post construction. The Former Drying Loft at Turkey Mills, along with the adjoining industrial building to the west, forms a significant group.
