Description
Turkey Court is a large mid-18th century private house located on Ashford Road, formerly the residence of the mill owner, including James and Susanna Whatman. The building features two parallel ranges, standing three storeys high with a semi-basement, constructed of red brick and grey leaders. It has a hipped tiled roof with a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The façade includes five sash windows with segmental heads and intact glazing bars. Access to the entrance is via six steps with a handrail, leading to a doorcase adorned with fluted pilasters, a curved pediment, and a door that is half glazed and half consists of two fielded panels.
To the west, there is a later 18th-century extension that is two storeys high with a semi-basement, featuring tall windows with iron balconettes on the first floor and a parapet roof. To the east, an early to mid-19th century wing matches the style of the main building, also three storeys high, made of red brick with three cambered sashes and one blank window on the rear elevation. Inside, the central portion contains an 18th-century staircase with three turned balusters on each tread and scrolled tread ends, along with 18th-century panelling. Turkey Court, along with the former drying loft at Turkey Mills and the industrial building adjoining it to the west, forms a group of historical significance.
