Description

Wren's Cross is a house that was later part of council offices, built in the early 19th century. The building is primarily constructed of stock brick, with the south front made of red brick. It features a hipped slate roof with two brick chimneystacks. The structure is two storeys high, with two windows and a central blank wall facing Upper Stone Street, and two windows facing Knightrider Street. It has a parapet and a painted stringcourse. Most of the windows are tripartite with intact glazing bays, and the ground floor windows are set in elliptical arches. The doorcase includes engaged fluted Doric columns, a triglyph frieze, a rectangular fanlight, and a six-panel door. On the front facing Knightrider Street, one window bay has a curved front that extends through both storeys. The south front is made of brown brick and features cross-shaped iron ties, along with a doorcase that has a cornice and brackets. Inside, there is a curved wooden well staircase with stick balusters and a skylight, a hall arch with foliate brackets, a rectangular fanlight above the former rear door, several six-panelled doors and cupboards, and some fireplace surrounds. A later 19th-century red brick police accommodation extension to the west is not considered of special interest.
