Description

This is a mid-17th century farmhouse, with an addition likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, and alterations to the facade in the early 19th century. The building is timber framed and now functions as a house. The front elevation features exposed principal posts and studs flanking the windows, with brick infilling and a decorative herringbone pattern to the top of the brickwork. The first floor is panelled and rendered, with fragments of glass embedded in the render. The front slope of the roof is slate, while the rear slopes are tiled.

The farmhouse originally comprised three, or possibly five, timber-framed bays, with a relatively short central bay, the long flanking bays potentially subdivided into two rooms each. A rear wing, originally attached to the right, extends for two timber-framed bays. A further wing, also of three timber-framed bays, was added later, abutting the right wing and stopping short of the left gable end of the main range.

The building has two storeys and a garret, with a cellar located beneath the front portion. A low ragstone plinth runs along the front. The eaves are flat. The roof is gabled to the left and half-hipped to the right. The right wing has lower eaves, a lower ridge line, and a gable to the rear. The central wing has slightly lower eaves and a lower ridge line than the front range, with a half-hip roof to the rear. A prominent gable end stack, incorporating galleted stone and a chequered red and grey brick flue, sits to the left, supported by a chamfered stone plinth. Additional brick stacks are located at the rear of the right bay and on the rear gable end of the right wing. The windows are irregular, consisting of leaded cross windows with moulded architraves; two tripartite sashes are at ground-floor level, the left narrower than the right. The left bay features an intermediate post on the ground floor, with pegged rails connecting it to the left post at both the top and bottom, and two studs between these rails, suggesting a formerly blocked fire window. A recessed front door has six fielded panels, a four-light fanlight above, a flat console hood, and access via three steps.

Internally, the left ground-floor room has chamfered cross beams with tenoned axial beams, and deeply-chamfered joists. The right ground-floor room features deeply-chamfered axial beams with tenoned cross beams. A cill-beam extends into the right wing, and a fireplace with an attenuated four-centred arched bressumer is on the rear wall. A stack projecting into the wing is constructed of ashlar, with a high, chamfered plinth. A boxed axial beam is present in the left first-floor room, and a hollow-chamfered axial beam in the right. Gunstock-jowled posts are found in the front range and right wing, whereas cut jowls characterize the central wing. A dog-leg staircase leads from the ground floor to the attic, positioned in the rear half of the central bay. A tall door with six moulded panels is located at the head of the stairs on the first floor. The front range and right wing have staggered butt purlin roofs, which are also ceiled above the purlins.
