Description
St Andrew’s House at Oakwood Hospital is a large institutional building dating from 1833, designed by architect John Whichcord. Constructed of ashlar, the building is three storeys high and comprises a long central block with two projecting wings. Stringcourses are present above the ground and first floors, topped by a cornice and parapet, with the parapet slightly higher over the central wings. Octagonal turrets rise from the roof, located centrally over each wing. A pediment sits above the central block, containing a clock face within the tympanum. A two-storey portico fronts the central block, featuring square columns and three arches on each floor. The ground floor arches are round-headed, while those on the first floor are square-headed; the sides of the ground floor arches are solid, whilst the first floor side arches are open and square-headed. A cornice runs over the entire portico. The original glazing bars are intact and iron grilles protect the windows. Large recessed wings, each containing 25 windows, are located at each end of the main block, and are likely later additions. These wings are similar in style to the main building, with 3-window projections at each end.
