Description

Lock Cottage is a mid-19th century house associated with the lock on Lock Lane in Sandling. It is constructed from random galletted ragstone with ragstone quoins, featuring gault brick stacks and a plain tile roof. The building has a T-plan layout, with the head of the T oriented at right angles to the lane and the stem at right angles to the river. There is an additional wing at the rear, which is a single-storey store and possibly an office, set back from the gable end of the stem and parallel to the head of the T.

The elevation facing the lane has a right section (the head) that is two storeys high, resting on a stone plinth that is only present at the gable end. It features carved bargeboards with a pendant, crested ridge tiles, and a central corbelled ridge stack. The first floor has a two-light casement window with a smaller light above, all set within chamfered stone architraves and topped with a stepped hood-mould that has label stops. The ground floor has a three-light casement with three top lights and a relieving arch above.

The left section (the stem) is lower, consisting of one storey and a garret, and has no windows. It features a central, slightly projecting gabled porch with carved bargeboards and a pendant. The porch contains a chamfered stone architrave of two orders, with the inner order being deeply recessed and now housing a three-light window with ragstone below. There is another door immediately to the right of the porch, set under a roof projection supported by stone brackets, leading to a ribbed and boarded door accessed by a flight of steps that starts level with the right gable, accompanied by a short octagonal pillar on the left side.

The elevation facing the river shows that the stem of the T has projecting eaves with plain bargeboards and a pendant. The store wing is one storey with an attic, featuring carved bargeboards and a pendant on the left gable, and a dormer at the right end. There is a pointed arched door to the attic in the gable, and an arched doorway with a ribbed and boarded door at the center of the main elevation, set within a slightly projecting porch that also has carved bargeboards and a pendant.
