Description

The Old Mill is a water mill dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded on a stone plinth. The left gable end facing the stream features a red brick wall in English bond below the timber framing. The roof is covered with plain tiles and the building is situated on a slope.

The mill has one storey and a basement at the front, while the rear has two storeys. There is a boarded half-door in the original opening at the left end, with a small boarded rectangular window located under the eaves to the right. To the left of center, there is a very small rectangular window under the eaves, and to the right of center, a narrow boarded half-door above the plinth.

Inside, the mill consists of three timber-framed bays. The bay nearest the stream has a heavily thickened brick ground-floor wall and contains 19th-century fittings for machinery. The roof features clasped purlins with reducing rafters, heavy collars, and curved windbraces, with the framing and beams left exposed. At the time of the resurvey, no machinery remained.
