Description
The wall and main entrance to Maidstone Prison were built between 1809 and 1811 by Daniel Alexander. The wall is made of Kentish ragstone and stands about 20 feet high, tapering inwards towards the top. It features buttresses at regular intervals and a string course approximately 6 feet from the ground. The main entrance, located along County Road, is constructed of Kentish ragstone ashlar. The central section of the entrance projects slightly and includes a pedimented cornice, with a wide moulded cornice below. It has long and short quoins, a round-headed entrance with stone voussoirs, and a small barred window on the left-hand side. All the listed buildings at Maidstone Prison form a group.
