Description
The Lower Stables Flat, stable, and storerooms, located approximately 35 yards southwest of Otterden Place, are outbuildings that may have originally served as stables. They date from the mid-16th century and the 18th century. The lower part is constructed of red brick in English bond, while the upper part features Flemish bond with occasional grey headers. The building has a plain tile roof and stands two storeys high on a brick plinth, with a coped gable at the south end and a small red brick ridge stack towards the left (north).
The structure includes three hipped dormers, likely added in the 20th century, and has irregular fenestration consisting of one six-light casement window on the first floor and two two-light casement windows on the ground floor, both with segmental heads. There are three doors with segmental heads: one boarded door leading to the stable at the right end, one boarded door with two top lights adjacent to the left, and one similar door to the left of centre featuring a round-headed hood on carved consoles, added in the late 20th century. To the left, there is a wooden cupola with a clock, bell, and weathervane, along with an 18th-century brick addition. The interior has not been inspected.
