Description

The Tithe Barn is a large 14th-century building that was later used as the stables for the Archbishop's Palace. It now serves as The Tyrwhitt Drake Museum of Carriages. The barn is constructed from stone rubble and has a hipped tiled roof, featuring six bays with a buttress between each. The east front has six small narrow windows on both floors. The west front includes five obtusely-pointed doorways, two of which are larger than the others, and a two-storeyed porch at the center. The ground floor of the porch is made of stone, while the first floor is timbered with modern brick infilling and extends out over the ends of the floor joists and brackets. There is a double loft door on the north side of the porch, accessible by a flight of stone steps, and topped with a gable. The west front also has five small windows on the first floor and an additional doorway. Inside, the barn features a crown-post roof. The building is part of a group that includes several significant structures associated with the Archbishop's Palace and the surrounding area.
