Description
The Parish Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building located on Mill Street in Maidstone. It was begun in 1395 by Archbishop Courtenay as a collegiate church and continued by Archbishop Arundel from 1396 to 1398. The church is built in the Perpendicular style using Kentish ragstone ashlar, featuring stone buttresses and a crenellated parapet. It has a south-west tower, although the spire was struck by lightning in 1730 and was never rebuilt.
The church has a six-bay nave with a clerestory and north and south aisles. The wooden roofs were installed by Pearson in 1886. The south chapel was originally the Chapel of the Fraternity of Corpus Christi and contains a credence and sedilia with four seats that incorporate the monument of the first master of the college. Inside, there are stalls with medieval misericords and an early 17th-century font.
Notable monuments include those of Archbishop Courtenay, who died in 1396, John Wotton, who died in 1417, Sir John Astley, who died in 1639, and John Davy, who died in 1631. There is also a medieval wall painting at the back of the tower. This church is regarded as the grandest Perpendicular church in Kent.
The church is part of a group of heritage sites that includes the Gateway and Wall to Palace Gardens, the Archbishop's Palace, and several other associated buildings and structures.
