Description
The Masters House, originally the Master's House to the College, dates back to the 14th century with alterations made in the 18th century and the addition of modern windows since then. It is constructed from Kentish ragstone and features two storeys and attics. The roof is tiled and has three hipped dormers with casements that have small square leaded panes. The building has a moulded wooden eaves cornice and a gable at the south end of the front. On the ground floor, there are two windows with pairs of ogee-headed lights, two narrower single trefoil-headed lancets, and one square-headed window with two obtusely-pointed lights. The first floor has modern windows.
Inside, the house includes a collar-braced roof, a 16th-century oak staircase, a moulded 16th-century ceiling, and an Aumbry cupboard. There are some stone fireplaces with spandrels and an early 18th-century fireplace with ovolo moulding. A plaque commemorates William Grocyn (1446-1519), who was Master of All Saints College and a Renaissance scholar. The building is part of a group that includes several significant structures related to the Archbishop's Palace and the College.
