Description

Rose Cottage and the attached former stockyard are a stockman's cottage and planned stockyard built in the early to mid-19th century. The cottage is located at the south end of the west range, with the ground floor consisting of feeding rooms, while the buildings on the south side of the yard are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond. The rest of the structure is open to the yard on the ground floor, with the first floor being timber framed, partly tile-hung, and partly clad in asbestos. The outer walls are made of red brick with stone lining, and the roof is covered with plain tiles. The building is set into a slope to the north and west.

The courtyard has its south side open at both the east and west ends. The former stockman's cottage is situated at the south end of the east range, with feed-mixing rooms located at the north-west and north-east corners, and additional rooms at the south end of the west range. Animals are housed in the remaining spaces of the north, west, and east ranges, with their backs facing the yard. Food is distributed using a tramline trolley. The north, west, and east ranges are two storeys high, with the ground floor open except at the corners and ends, supported by wooden posts on padstones and hinged for doors. The north range has 10 bays, while the west range has 7. The gable ends feature plain bargeboards and moulded pendants.

The fenestration is irregular, consisting of 2-light leaded metal casements under the eaves, with 6 in the north range and 4 in each of the east and west ranges. There are three first-floor loading doors in the north range and one towards the centre of the west range, roughly flanked by windows, with additional doors opposite in the rear walls. The mixing rooms and the south-west rooms have segmental-headed doorways. The south range is single storey, with a taller, wider central section that has bargeboards and pendants on all four gable ends. This section features 2-light casements and two stable doors. The flanking sections previously had two open bays each.

Rose Cottage, the stockman's cottage, has a stack on its south gable end and features irregular fenestration with three recessed casements that have segmental heads. There is a boarded door with flanking windows at the south end of the east side. This building was formerly part of Maytum Farm and is included for its group value.
