Description

The Tithe Barn is a Grade I listed barn, likely built in the late 14th century. It features a timber frame with weatherboarding, standing on a patched stone plinth, and has a hipped plain tile roof. There is a 19th-century canopy on the left end of the west elevation and plain double doors on the right end.

Inside, the barn has nine bays, of which seven are original, while two date from the late 15th or early 16th century. It includes aisles at both ends and along both sides. The posts rest on wooden cills, with some supported by stone pedestals and others on continuous stone plinths. The outer walls are assembled in a typical manner, with slightly curved passing shores extending from the cills to the tops of the posts. Curved braces, some of which have been replaced, connect the arcade posts to the arcade plates and tie-beams. The aisle roofs have a single purlin, which is intermittently pegged to the rafters, and feature raked Queen posts. The arcade posts are jowled, and the plain crown posts have two downward and two upward curved braces, along with lapped collars. While some wall studs have been replaced, they are generally in the same mortices. There is also evidence of arch bracing in the outer walls.

The barn is located on land that was part of the demesne of St. Augustine's, Canterbury. It is one of two barns; the other, positioned at right angles to the northwest, was destroyed by fire in 1962.
